When you’re putting content out into the digital stratosphere, you want to make sure it reaches as far and wide as possible. Time is of the essence, and you may not always have the luxury executing multiple strategic marketing tactics to get your compelling content read. So how do you make sure that your content is reaching its distribution potential? Here are a few key tools you can implement now to help maximize content distribution without eating up your time.

What is Content Distribution?

First, let’s do a quick review of content distribution before jumping in. There are three channels that you use when you release your content:

  1. Owned
  2. Earned
  3. Paid

Owned includes channels where you are the decision maker on content. Places such as your email, blog, or social media accounts are under this category.

Earned concerns the content that is shared by others. This may be when your blog gets a review or someone shares a post from your social media account.

Paid involves paying for your content to be viewed. Ways to utilize paid media include pay-per-click, social media advertisements, or press releases just to name a few.

Now that you’ve been refreshed on the bare bones, here are some key tools to help achieve content distribution in all three channels.

This ingenious marketing tool is a piece of cake and an uber-time saver. It allows you to compose multiple content pieces at once, decide which social media profiles to send them to (LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+, or Twitter accounts) and then Buffer will post them over the course of the day or week for you. This application also gives you the option of re-circulating previously posted content, right from the Buffer dashboard.


MailChimp is a platform set up to send out email marketing campaigns or newsletters. For users who have 2,000 or fewer contacts on their mailing lists, the service is free. MailChimp is customizable, and you make the decisions on delivery. Organize automatic campaigns you’ve handcrafted or simply send out new content once you’ve completed it.


This may be an option you may have not previously considered. Quora, a service that receives multi-million hits per month, is set up as a question and answer website. You can pose a question and users will answer and give their input. Be sure to include a more detailed post, rather than a straight question, as it engages users more. You may also get involved by answering posted questions yourself by providing an in-depth and thoughtful answer with a link to a relevant topic from your own website. This will prompt other users to go to your website/blog/social media account.

Other ways to capitalize on your owned content include:

  • Posting more frequently. If you normally post one piece per week, step it up by posting two. This will allow users to see new content from you more often, thus keeping you fresh in their mind.
  • Open up new channels. Blogging may be your style, but try something else in conjunction with it, say a newsletter. Send out a weekly newsletter with an overview and few extra bits of information plus a link to your newest blog post(s).
